Public bath: Culture of Kusatsu
 There are 18 public baths in the area where you can enjoy bathing and chatting with locals in a rustic environment. Keep in mind that public baths are part of everyday life for locals. Mind your manners when bathing. Admission is free. |
Located in the heart of the spa resort area, the source of the hot spirings – the symbol of Kusatsu - gushes as much as 4,000L of hot water per minute. The very hot water is sent to each spa facility and Ryokan via wooden gutter. Yubatake is lit up after dark to create a stunning sight and wonderful atmosphere. The gourd-shaped Yubatake and its environs "Yuho to Ikoi no Ba (lit. The place of promenade and relaxation)" is built under the supervision of a famous artist Taro Okamoto. The names of the 100 celebrities who have visited Kusatsu are carved on a stone parapet.
The scenery at Sai no Kawara is very unique with large rocks and hot spring water bubbling to the surface. Along the walking trail are stone monuments, stone tablets with haiku inscriptions, a vivid red shrine gate and the visitor center. Sai No Kawara Outdoor Bath, the largest open-air hot bath in Kusatsu, is located at the end of the park.
